Cardio Partners Collaborates with Weis Markets for AED Program Launch in Baltimore

In recent news, Weis Markets partnered with Cardio Partners in response to the Maryland Bill, SB299, which will require grocery stores in the state of Maryland to have an accessible AED on-site by January 2025. This partnership included the launch of an AED program that allowed Weis Markets to equip all 49 of their stores across Maryland with a Philips AED, making them one of the first grocery chains to have every store equipped and prepared for a cardiac emergency.

At the launch event held at Weis Markets' Nottingham store location in Baltimore, Cardio Partners, Weis Markets, and Philips came together to celebrate this safety milestone. Delegate Bonnie Cullison, Delegate Carl Jackson, and State Senator Katherine Klausmeier attended the event to discuss the importance of implementing AEDs in Maryland grocery stores.

Carol McDermott Sheya, an advocate for AEDs/CPR, shared her personal story of losing her husband to sudden cardiac arrest, underscoring the need for more companies to follow Weis Markets' example of community safety.

AP Safety Specialist at Weis Markets Jason Kaufman shared the impact he believes this new initiative will have, “The AED program equips Weis Markets' trained and non-trained associates with the tools needed to increase the chances of survival during cardiac arrest incidents. Without this program, the chances of survival decrease significantly. This initiative aims to enhance safety for both employees and customers alike.”

As part of their commitment to safety, Weis Markets has not only equipped their stores with AEDs but also initiated comprehensive training programs. These programs focus on CPR, AED First Aid, and Stop the Bleed techniques, ensuring that both customers and employees are well-prepared to respond effectively in the event of an emergency.

“Since January 1st, 2024, we have trained 403 associates across different facilities, ensuring a knowledgeable response team in the event of emergencies,” Jason shares.

Weis not only trained their own associates, but they arranged for Baltimore County Fire and Emergency Medical Services to join the AED launch event to provide hands-only CPR to those who attended. On the side, Cardio Partners and Philips provided product knowledge on AEDs, including live demonstrations of how the device works.

Cardio Partners was proud to participate in an event to help Weis Markets spread the word on their proactive safety measure in hopes of encouraging other businesses to prioritize implementing AED programs and potentially save lives within their communities.
